August

Roger resumed bowling on Wednesday 10, his hip having settled down and by then on a course of antibiotics for the subsequent infection.

Both Roger’s and Helen’s birthdays fall in mid-August, so, as usual, we got together on the weekend of 13-14 August for some low-key celebrations.  The birthday meal this year was a Chinese take-away, but Teresa had been busy making Roger a birthday cake with appropriate decoration:

Roger’s presents included a flowering cherry for the garden, a potted citrus grove for the patio and a large parasol for the summer we were still waiting for, a well as books, chocolates and carefully chosen cards.

On Friday 12 we went to Moreton-in-March, looking round the village before having coffee in the Fosseway Garden Centre.

On Saturday 13 we visited the Slaughters – Upper and Lower – near Stow-on-the-Wold, driving through Upper Slaughter before stopping in Lower Slaughter to see The Old Mill, recently restored as a museum and craft shop.  Both are picturesque Cotswold villages, the latter much the larger and a tourist attraction.  A wedding was scheduled in the church, and we were lucky to find a parking place – there is neither a public car-park nor one at The Old Mill, so a five minute walk along the River Eye is necessary to get to the mill.

More about Lower Slaughter

On Sunday 14 we went to the Evesham Country Park, where there is a narrow gauge railway, a large garden centre and several retail outlets.  We rode the railway, but shopped only briefly – mainly for provisions from the farm shop.

Jay returned home for a fortnight’s break towards the end of the month, returning to Oxford once or twice for the day for her ice skating sessions.
